Interfaith and intertribal conflicts, extreme poverty, disease and environmental challenges pose rising threats to peace and development everywhere. The recent and ongoing global financial crisis has particularly affected peoples in the developing world, bringing renewed urgency to the task of meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals addressing extreme poverty and disease. Through an effective, coordinated global peace corps, combining the skills and resources of government, NGOs, faith-based organizations, corporations, and the volunteer sector, a critical mass can be achieved to bring sustainable peace and provide basic human needs.

A number of leaders from government, civil society and faith communities have called for the creation of a new international corps of volunteers to work for peace and development. These have included U.S. President Barack Obama; British Prime Minister Gordon Brown; Crown Prince El Hassan Bin Talal of Jordan; and Hyun jin Moon, founder of Service For Peace and Global Peace Festival, among others.

In 2008 Global Peace Festivals and related social impact projects took place in more than 25 nations. The Global Peace Service Alliance was formally launched in Kenya following the 2008 festival in Nairobi and will build upon the festival’s vision of one family under God through a trifold platform of interfaith peace building, family strengthening, and realization of a global culture of service.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Global Peace Service Alliance brings many assets to the table, including:

• Hundreds of thousands of participants from the 2008 and 2009 Global Peace Festivals in more than 25 nations;
• Hundreds of prominent leaders (parliamentarians, former heads of state, NGO, faith-based and corporate leaders) committed to advancing peace through service projects;
• The knowledge and experience derived from hundreds of service projects conducted around the world; and
• Grassroots organizations eager to expand their peace work in global hot spots.

The Alliance works in three distinct yet related areas: (1) conflict prevention and peace building; (2) development,  including support of the Millennium Development Goals, and (3) clean water. The Alliance empowers youth engagement in volunteerism and interfaith service projects and taps Web 2.0 in promotional efforts and in creating social networks for peace.
